From 2027 onwards, it will become law that all new cars must be fitted with Driver Monitoring Systems. These cameras will scan our faces, irises and finger-prints every time we get into the car and will pass real-time information to the authorities concerning our biometrics, location and emotional state. If we are deemed unfit for driving, our own cars will refuse to start. They may even report us to the police.

What is the reason the government is giving for this intrusion on our personal liberties? Safety. "It's for your own safety" they explain. "We are taking this control for your own good."

"Safety" has often been the plea of tyrants, and this is the latest example of creeping authoritarianism in the West. We must learn to push-back on it. Because the problem is that too many are now happy to be coddled by the state. Too many are happy to give up their freedoms for the promise of safety.
